Turning your career from good to great
Building a truly exceptional osteopathic practice requires more than just being good practitioners. It involves a journey of continuous improvement, disciplined action and a commitment to excellence.
In Jim Collins’ renowned book “Good to Great,” he delves into the secrets of companies that have achieved sustained greatness. So, let’s explore how Jim’s lessons can be applied to transform your career, whether you own a clinic or work as an associate.

Discipline: it’s not what you think
As I began reading this book, Jim speaks a lot about discipline, which did put my back up a little as I thought he was going to talk about how discipline is about strict control and micromanaging.
After reading the book, I discovered that discipline is about being open to new ideas and always trying to get better. It’s like a strong foundation that helps a clinic succeed in the long run.
Discipline is about staying focused on goals and doing things well. It helps everyone in the practice work together and be reliable. So, by embracing discipline, osteopathic clinics can achieve their goals, stay ahead of the competition and be adaptable to external change that’s outside their control.
Hiring the right people for success
Collins highlights the importance of having the right people in the right positions. This principle holds true for osteopathic practices as well.
When building your team, seek out practitioners and staff who are not only skilled but also share your practice’s identity, values and goals. Surrounding yourself with motivated practitioners who are aligned with your vision will greatly contribute to the success of your clinic.
You can work with us to find and strengthen your brand identity, values and business goals.
Investing time and effort in finding and retaining the right practitioners will be worth the extended search.
Cultivating a culture of discipline
Creating a culture of discipline within your practice is vital.
This involves holding yourself and your team accountable for actions and aligning everyone towards a common goal.
Implement clear processes and systems that ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care. Encourage an environment where each practitioner understands their responsibilities and knows how to make each visit to the practice an excellent one.
Embracing innovation and change
Embracing innovation and change is crucial for any osteopathic practice aspiring for greatness.
Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks and explore new avenues. Keep an eye on emerging technologies and strategies to see what you can do differently in your local community.
By staying ahead of the curve and adapting to changes, you can continuously improve patient outcomes and differentiate yourself from competitors. Remember, it’s not about being better, it’s about being different.
Be open to incorporating innovative approaches that align with your practice’s values and enhance the quality of care you provide.
Summary
“Good to Great” offers valuable lessons for transforming your osteopathic practice from good to great. By focusing on disciplined people, cultivating a culture of discipline, and embracing innovation and change, you can set your clinic on a path to sustained growth and success.
